Iron River, WI

Iron River is an unincorporated Bayfield County community on US 2, 27 miles west of Ashland and 37 miles east of Superior. The highway is its main regional line, but the local map is made of woods, lakes, trails, and small roads running through northern Wisconsin. The community sits in the Town of Iron River and serves as the staging point for the Bayfield County Fair, which has been held here since 1894. The fairgrounds turn the town into a county gathering place each August, with animals, exhibits, carnival rides, and grandstand events.

Outside fair week, Iron River's Northwoods setting carries the daily rhythm: fishing and boating on nearby lakes, snowmobile and ATV routes, campgrounds, and the Oulu Cultural and Heritage Center's Finnish history exhibits a short drive away. Indian Trails provides intercity bus service, giving the unincorporated place a link beyond the forest roads. Iron River does not have a municipal downtown in the same way as a city, but it has a strong community address: US 2, the fairgrounds, the lake country, and the network of year-round recreation and volunteer organizations around it.
