Ironwood, MI

Ironwood is a Gogebic County city of 5,045 residents in the 2020 census, eighteen miles south of Lake Superior on the Montreal River at the Michigan-Wisconsin line. It grew after prospectors found iron in the 1880s and the railroad arrived in 1884; by 1891, six mines employed more than 3,000 men. The mines closed over time, with the last city mine shutting in 1965, and the old rail corridor now carries a snowmobile trail. The city’s present map still follows that mining and transport history. The 1892 depot houses the Ironwood Area Historical Society museum and Chamber of Commerce, while downtown holds the Historic Ironwood Theatre and other civic spaces.

The Montreal River forms the western boundary and runs past Norrie Park, a 100-plus-acre wooded preserve with a paved and boardwalk trail, playground, picnic area, community garden, and hiking and biking routes. Mt. Zion offers downhill skiing and tubing, Curry Park has RV camping, and the Pat O’Donnell Civic Center handles skating and hockey. The city’s trail plans tie abandoned rail grades into the Iron Belle network toward Wisconsin and nearby Michigan communities. The local scoop is an old mining city where the depot, river, snow, theater, and trails all keep the original rail-and-ore map visible.
