Isleta, NM

Isleta Village Proper is a Bernalillo County census-designated place on the west bank of the Rio Grande, about fifteen miles south of Albuquerque in the larger Pueblo of Isleta landscape. The 2010 census counted 491 residents. Albuquerque Public Schools serve the CDP, while Isleta Elementary School, the Isleta Pueblo Library, and the Pueblo’s own departments give the place a distinct local service map. The river valley, irrigation works, and I-25 corridor keep Albuquerque close.

The Pueblo of Isleta was established in the 1300s, and the Spanish name Isleta means “little island.” The Mission of San Antonio de la Isleta was founded in 1612, adding another layer to a much older Tiwa community. The census label captures a small village area inside that broader Pueblo setting. Pueblo history remains part of daily life. Today the local map combines Pueblo government, school and library services, Rio Grande farmland, and a short metropolitan connection into Albuquerque, with the river still defining the eastern edge.
