About Jamestown

Jamestown is Russell County’s seat, established in 1826 when the county itself was newly formed. It briefly carried the name Jacksonville, honoring Andrew Jackson after the 1824 presidential election, before settling on Jamestown. That short detour gives the place a bit of early Kentucky political history, but the town’s role remains practical: county seat, home-rule city, and branch of the Russell County Public Library. Jamestown is a small Kentucky courthouse town with a name that changed once, a county it has served since the beginning, and a library branch still serving the local map.
