About Jasper

Jasper is Hamilton County’s seat, a North Florida city on the lowlands between the Suwannee and Alapaha rivers. The Old Hamilton County Jail, now a museum, and the First United Methodist Church are both listed on the National Register, giving the town two historic markers. Jasper’s early settlement story includes Miccosukee villages near the Alapaha, followed by the wagon road and rail lines that pulled the town toward its present center. The old railroad bed through downtown is now Central Avenue, while phosphate mining belongs to the county’s later industrial chapter. Jasper is a courthouse town with river country and rail history under its streets.
