Jasper, MO

Jasper is a small city in Jasper County on I-49/U.S. 71, about ten miles south of Lamar and ten miles north of Carthage. The town sits in the open farm country between those county-seat communities, and its name has changed as the local map changed: Coon Creek settlement became Midway, then Jasper, reusing the postal equipment from an earlier Jasper southeast of Carthage.

Jasper County R-V School District serves the city, while the highway supplies a modern line through the older rural setting. Farm roads and open fields do most of the visual work between the highway and town center. The place’s history is modest but distinctive: a name borrowed from a vanished post office, a midpoint position between larger county towns, and a small community that kept its own identity in the middle of the Joplin metropolitan area. Jasper is a Missouri town whose story is less about a single landmark than about the way roads, names, and county boundaries keep reshaping a place.
