Jay, FL

Jay is a Santa Rosa County town on high ground along the east bank of the Escambia River, about three miles from the Alabama line. The area was known as Cobb Old Field and later Pine Level before the present town took shape. Early settlers worked in timber and logging and kept cattle on open range, while the later farm economy centered on cotton, soybeans, peanuts, and hay. A livestock market opened in 1940 and became a major local trading point before closing near the turn of the century. The town’s river position still sets its geography.

Jay’s present-day life sits between farming and the river watershed. Santa Rosa County agriculture programs, including UF/IFAS extension work and the Escambia River Watershed Project, have a Jay address. Boat ramps outside the town limits connect residents to the river, while nearby Milton and Pensacola handle larger services and employment. The town is part of the Pensacola metro area without losing its rural Panhandle shape. Jay feels like a farm town with a river on one side and Alabama close enough to shape the daily map.
