Jefferson, TX

Jefferson is Marion County's seat in Northeast Texas, set at the meeting of Big Cypress Creek and Caddo Lake. The 2020 census counted 1,875 residents. City Hall and county offices give the place a civic role that feels larger than its headcount, while the highways carry through traffic along the edge of the old river town. Jefferson's backstory turns on water: before rail and highway travel, the Red River made this a gateway for goods and settlers, and the town rose as a riverport during the mid-nineteenth century.

The twist is the Great Red River Raft, a huge log jam that acted like a natural dam far upstream. Its removal opened the river but also changed the water routes that had made Jefferson prosper, leaving the town with a history shaped by a river that first built its fortunes and then stopped being as dependable. Jefferson ISD serves local students, and the old port story still gives the streets around downtown a particular sense of scale.
