Jericho Center, VT

Jericho Center is the central village of Jericho, Vermont, gathered around a town green where Brown's Trace meets Varney Road and Bolger Hill Road. The village developed mainly in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and its 17-acre historic district was listed on the National Register in 1983. The roads, open land, and closely spaced homes give the center a shape distinct from the wider town's farms and wooded areas. It is a small Vermont crossroads, but the green makes the place feel immediately legible when the roads fold into one another.

Jericho Town Library sits near the green, and the former 1847 Universalist church now serves as the Community Center of Jericho. The Jericho Center Preservation Association helped restore the building so residents could meet, learn, and hold local activities there. The Jericho Center Country Store began as Blackman's Store in 1807 and remains one of Vermont's oldest continuously operating general stores. The green, library, community center, and store make Jericho Center feel like a village organized around a few enduring buildings and the roads that connect them.
