About Jewell

Jewell got its start back in 1870 along Buffalo Creek, when homesteaders built a simple sod outpost named Fort Jewell on the north-central Kansas prairie. First established as Jewell City, it became the area's earliest hub and temporary county seat, named in honor of Civil War officer Lewis R. Jewell. What began as a rugged frontier settlement soon grew into a steady farming community with deep local roots.

Stores, churches, and the county's first school district quickly followed, shaping a close-knit neighborhood. While the county courthouse eventually moved over to Mankato, Jewell kept its quiet charm and easygoing pace.
