Jewett, TX

Jewett is a Leon County city laid out in 1871 by the International Railroad Company. The 2020 census counted 793 residents. State Highway 79, Farm Road 39, and the former Missouri Pacific line still orient the community. Railroads drove an early commercial surge: the Houston and Texas Central arrived in 1905, the Trinity and Brazos in 1907, and three lines served Jewett until the Houston and Texas Central was abandoned in 1933. Banks, general stores, and a cotton gin once filled the business district, and Nucor's steel plant later added an industrial chapter.

The present-day school and lake connections are both regional. Leon Independent School District lists its district address in Jewett and offers academic, athletic, cultural, and extracurricular programs for local children. Lake Limestone Marina uses a Jewett address on the reservoir, giving the city a current connection to boating and lake facilities. The same highway-and-rail corridor that first organized Jewett now links education, water access, and industrial work across Leon County.
