Jonesville, SC

Jonesville is a small Union County town whose strongest landmarks are houses, not grand civic monuments. The McWhirter House, built in 1909 for Hattie Fripp McWhirter, carries a formal Neo-Classical design and the story of a family involved in the town’s civic and economic life. Its scale and detailing show the ambitions that could gather around a South Carolina town at the edge of the Piedmont, even when the surrounding landscape remained rural.

The Means House reaches further back. Built in 1821, it retains Georgian and Federal details on a sizable tract, giving Jonesville a second historic reference point and a sense of how the area changed from early farms to a settled town. Today, Jonesville’s streets lead quickly into Union County countryside and the neighboring roads that tie the town to the Upstate. The two preserved houses make a useful starting point for reading the place: one reflects the early nineteenth century, the other the turn of the twentieth, with ordinary town life filling in the years between.
