About Jordan

Jordan is a village in the Town of Elbridge that grew up around the Erie Canal and still carries that canal-era shape. The village was settled in 1797 and incorporated in 1835, then expanded when the canal opened in 1825. By the time the New York Central and Hudson River Railroad arrived in 1855, Jordan had a canal, rail line, stores, and a clear role among the communities west of Syracuse. The original canal route was bypassed by the New York State Barge Canal in the early twentieth century, but the historic district remains. Jordan is one of those places where the old waterway is no longer the main route, but still accounts for the town’s footprint.
