Julian, CA

Set high in the Cuyamaca Mountains about an hour east of San Diego, Julian is a small mountain town with roots going back to an 1870 gold rush. Today, around 1,800 people live here, enjoying a quiet community surrounded by pines, oak trees, and rolling hills. When mining faded, local growers planted apple orchards, kicking off a tradition that still thrives with roadside cider stands, fresh-baked pies, and lively fall harvest festivals.

Daily life in Julian is defined by its slower pace, crisp mountain air, and four distinct seasons, including occasional winter snow. Families have local elementary and high schools right in town, while outdoor enthusiasts can hop straight onto trails in the Cleveland National Forest or the Pacific Crest Trail. Because the town is a designated Dark Sky Community, the stargazing at night is incredible, and the preserved historic Main Street gives everyday errands a relaxed, welcoming feel.
