Junction City, OH

Junction City is a Perry County village laid out in 1872 where two rail lines met. That railroad junction gave the place its name and its first reason to grow; the post office opened the same year. County histories add a more local twist: two nearby settlements, Trio City and Damascus, grew close enough to cause a naming dispute, and a judge settled it by joining them under Junction City. The village remains small, but its history is larger than its footprint.

New Lexington is the nearby school center, with New Lexington Schools operating Junction City Elementary in the village. The Perry County District Library also maintains a branch here. Junction City’s railroad past still shapes how people picture it, even as the old transportation economy has faded. Nearby Perry County preserves other traces of southeastern Ohio’s coal and industrial era, and the former Junction City Prison later appeared in the 1980 film Brubaker. For a village of 721 in the 2020 census, those layers make the name feel unusually well earned.
