Kadoka, SD

Kadoka sits along Interstate 90 on the open plains of western South Dakota, right near the eastern entrance to Badlands National Park. With around 550 residents, it serves as the county seat of Jackson County and a central hub for surrounding ranch and farm families. The name comes from a Lakota word meaning "hole in the wall," describing the pass where flat grasslands break into the steep Badlands formations. Its spot on the highway brings travelers headed toward the Black Hills, but the community maintains a steady, independent rhythm throughout the year.

Day-to-day life in town centers on local schools, community sports, and the outdoors. Kadoka Area Schools educate students from kindergarten through twelfth grade right in town. Main Street preserves its early railroad roots through the historic Pearl Hotel and a restored 1907 depot museum, mixed with local cafes, grocery options, and service shops.
