Kalaeloa, HI

Kalaeloa sits on the sunny southwest tip of Oahu, occupying the expansive grounds of the former Barbers Point Naval Air Station. The base officially closed in 1999, and the area has been steadily finding new purpose ever since. Its Hawaiian name translates to "long point," while the longtime nickname Barbers Point honors Captain Henry Barber, whose ship ran aground on the nearby reef in 1796. Today, Kalaeloa offers a distinct West Oahu setting just minutes from Kapolei, combining storied aviation heritage with sunny open space.

Spanning roughly 3,700 acres, the area brings together an eclectic blend of neighborhoods, schools, and local services. Newcomers will find quiet residential pockets and Barbers Point Elementary alongside Coast Guard facilities, veteran programs, and University of Hawaii training centers. Because long-term redevelopment is still actively rolling out across different parcels, historic hangars and general aviation runways at Kalaeloa Airport share the district with local small businesses, community hubs, and quiet stretches of open land.

Recreation is a major draw for residents, especially along the shoreline. White Plains Beach is a beloved local favorite for beginner surfing and sunny weekend barbecues, while Nimitz Beach and the Kalaeloa Heritage Park offer peaceful oceanfront walking and ancient cultural landmarks. With shopping, dining, and daily conveniences right next door in Kapolei and Ewa Beach, Kalaeloa provides a laid-back, evolving coastal community with plenty of room to breathe.
