Kalispell, MT

Kalispell has turned part of the rail corridor that created the city into the Parkline Trail, a paved route opened in 2022 that runs about 1.7 miles through downtown between the city's western neighborhoods and Woodland Park. The Flathead Valley was long home to Salish, Kootenai, and Pend d'Oreille people before large-scale non-Native settlement. Railroad executive James J. Hill selected Kalispell as a Great Northern Railway division point in 1891, and the city's name comes from a Pend d'Oreille expression translated as “prairie above the lake.” Kalispell incorporated in 1892 and remained the Flathead County seat and northwest Montana's main commercial center even after the railroad shifted its regional hub to Whitefish in 1904. The Parkline Trail now connects several everyday destinations, including downtown, Depot Park, and Woodland Park.

Woodland is a four-season space with mature trees, a pond, picnic facilities, and an outdoor hockey rink; the adjoining Woodland Water Park operates during summer. Across the city, Kalispell Parks and Recreation maintains about 445 acres of parks and natural open space, from small neighborhood sites to athletic complexes and walking trails. Flathead Valley Community College's main campus is in Kalispell and hosts the Saturday Kalispell Farmers Market from May into October, bringing regional growers, ranchers, artists, and makers together during the 2026 season. Residents without a car have a county-operated option through Mountain Climber, which provides on-demand shared rides within Kalispell and fixed-route connections to Whitefish and Columbia Falls. U.S. Routes 2 and 93 intersect in the city, while Glacier Park International Airport is northeast of town.
