Kandiyohi, MN

Kandiyohi is a city in central Minnesota, about six miles east of Willmar, with US Highway 12 running through town. Its name comes from a Dakota word meaning where the buffalo fish come, linking the city to the region's lakes and Indigenous geography. Kandiyohi was platted in 1869 when the railroad reached the area, and that same year the Minnesota Legislature selected it as a proposed state capital. Governor William Rainey Marshall vetoed the plan, but the episode remains one of the town's clearest historical turns.

Two years later, Kandiyohi became a temporary county seat when Kandiyohi and Monongalia counties merged; Willmar was then chosen for its central position. A marker south of town points toward the original proposed capitol site. The city maintains a compact municipal footprint, five parks, a volunteer fire department, and the MN C.H.A.R.M. building for local history. Kandiyohi's story is compact but layered: Dakota name, railroad plat, almost-capital, temporary county seat, and a highway town still holding those pieces together.
