Kaneville, IL

Kaneville is a village in southwestern Kane County, part of the Chicago metropolitan area but set among the farm roads west of Aurora. The 2020 census counted 452 residents. The village center is around Main Street and Harter Road, about 12 miles northwest of Aurora and near Interstate 88. The Werdin Community Center houses village and township offices, a public library, preschool, and other local services, giving Kaneville a clear civic address inside a largely rural township.

The first permanent settlers arrived in 1836, and the village grew where two stage-road furrows crossed: one route ran from Batavia toward Dixon, the other from Chicago toward Galena. The settlement was first called Royalton, but that name was already taken, so it became Kaneville after Elias Kane, the founder of Kane County. Stores, churches, schools, a post office, and a stage line followed the crossroads. Kaneville incorporated in 2006, but its basic local logic is older than the village government: two roads meeting, a community gathering around them, and the larger Chicago-area map just beyond the fields.
