Kanopolis, KS

With fewer than 500 residents, Kanopolis is a quiet central Kansas town with a rich frontier past and great access to the outdoors. The community grew around historic Fort Harker, and several original 19th-century military stone buildings still stand in town alongside a dedicated local museum. Just down the road, outdoor enthusiasts spend weekends exploring the scenic sandstone bluffs and trails at Kanopolis State Park, boating on the reservoir, or checking out the bizarre geologic formations at nearby Mushroom Rock State Park.

Day-to-day life here moves at an easy, unhurried pace, supported by longtime local employers like the Independent Salt Company. Community traditions run strong, especially every July when neighbors gather for the annual Fort Harker Days festival. On warm summer nights, residents can catch a double feature under the open sky at the Kanopolis Drive-In, one of the state's few surviving classic outdoor theaters.
