About Kaskaskia

Kaskaskia is one of the Midwest's most unusual geographic quirks: an Illinois village that actually sits west of the Mississippi River. After a massive 1881 flood shifted the river's course, it cut off the former state capital from the rest of Illinois, meaning you now have to drive through Missouri to get there. Today, it is an extremely small, quiet community surrounded by peaceful farmland and rich history. It mostly serves as a sleepy, curious detour for visitors exploring local lore, nearby river bluffs, and the historic Liberty Bell of the West.
