Kauneonga Lake, NY

Kauneonga Lake is a Sullivan County hamlet in the Town of Bethel, stretched along New York Route 55 about eight miles west-northwest of Monticello. Its post office gives the community a practical center, but the lake is the real organizing detail: the name appears twice, in the settlement and the water beside it. That pairing puts Kauneonga Lake in the Catskills’ summer-country tradition, where roads, cottages, and local businesses follow the shoreline.

Bethel’s music history is close at hand. Nearby White Lake hosted the 1969 Woodstock Music and Art Fair, so Kauneonga Lake sits inside the same landscape that made this corner of Sullivan County famous, even though the festival site was White Lake, not Kauneonga Lake.
