Kearney, MO

Kearney started in the mid-1800s as a railroad town in Clay County, absorbing the older settlement of Centerville as it expanded. The community is best known as the birthplace of Frank and Jesse James, who grew up on a family farm just northeast of town. Today, Clay County maintains the Jesse James Birthplace as a historic site and museum, where visitors can tour the original cabin, walk the grounds, and learn about the complex history of the area, including the outlaws and the enslaved people who lived on the property.
