Kekoskee, WI

At the 2020 census, Kekoskee was a Dodge County village of 896 on the East Branch of the Rock River, with a history tied to water, farming, and the boundary lines of Wisconsin government. The village was incorporated in 1958 from part of the Town of Williamstown, and in 2018 it attached the remaining town, a move that turned a small municipal story into a regional conversation about how to keep local government workable. Water is still the clearest way to understand the place. Kekoskee Dam sits at river mile 306.5 and includes a small hydropower facility; paddlers on the Rock River Water Trail take out at Village Park before continuing toward Horicon Marsh. The village also contains the protected Kekoskee Archaeological District, a Native American burial ground whose exact location is kept restricted, plus a metal pony-truss bridge over the river’s east fork. Children attend Mayville or Horicon schools. Kekoskee is little on a map but layered: the dam, the marsh country, old farms, a village hall, and a community still keeping its own past in circulation.
