About Kemp

Kemp is a Kaufman County city at the north end of Cedar Creek Lake, with U.S. 175 skirting its northeast side. The post office opened in 1851, and the place took its name from Malvina Kemp Watkins, wife of the first postmaster. Early Kemp also had a Presbyterian congregation and the Kemp Academy of Learning, which began in 1867. Today the lake and the highway do much of the visual work, but the old town story is still there: a post office, a railroad bet, and a name borrowed from a local family.
