Kenner, LA

Kenner occupies the west side of Greater New Orleans between Lake Pontchartrain and the Mississippi River. Metairie and River Ridge lie east, while St. Charles Parish forms the western boundary. Minor Kenner founded the city in 1855 on three plantation properties acquired by his family: Oakland, Belle Grove, and Pasture; land north of present-day Airline Highway was then swampland. A 2020 count of 66,448 made Kenner the most populous city in Jefferson Parish and the largest incorporated New Orleans suburb. Near the river end of Williams Boulevard, a monument marks the site where “Gypsy” Jem Mace defeated Tom Allen for the bare-knuckle heavyweight championship on May 10, 1870.
