Kent Narrows, MD

Kent Narrows is a small Queen Anne’s County town built around the channel that separates Kent Island from the Eastern Shore mainland. The 2020 census counted 612 residents, but the waterway gives the place a much larger regional role. Maryland Route 18 crosses the narrows, while U.S. 50/301 divides the community into distinct pieces on either side. The channel links the Chester River and Eastern Bay, making Kent Narrows both a passage and a place to stop. It is one of those towns where the map is mostly water, bridges, parking lots, docks, and roads bending toward the Bay Bridge.

For generations, the shoreline supported watermen, oyster, crab, and clam boats, along with packing plants that moved seafood to markets beyond the Eastern Shore. That working-waterfront history is still visible in the marinas, seafood restaurants, and boats along the channel, even as visitors now arrive for boating, dining, and Chesapeake scenery. The Chesapeake Heritage & Visitors Center gives the area a place to tell that story, and the community plan still treats marine industry and recreation as twin halves of Kent Narrows. The town is small, but it is not tucked away from regional traffic: it is the first Eastern Shore waterfront stop many people reach after crossing the Bay Bridge. Kent Narrows feels like a working inlet that learned how to share its docks with the weekend crowd.
