Kenvir, KY

Sitting about eight miles east of downtown Harlan, Kenvir is a small community strung out along Yocum Creek near the Virginia border. Its name comes from combining Kentucky and Virginia, reflecting its spot right next to the state line. The town started around 1918 as a coal camp built by the Black Mountain Coal Company, quickly growing to include local schools, churches, a theater, and rows of family homes built along the narrow valley.

The local mines closed in the late 1950s, and today Kenvir is a peaceful place to call home. Historic company-era houses still line the creek, with steep, wooded hills rising up on both sides of the hollow. Kentucky Route 215 runs straight through the community, making it an easy ten-minute drive into Harlan for groceries, dining, and healthcare. It offers a quiet, relaxed setting for anyone looking for rural mountain living with a strong sense of local history.
