About Kerens

Kerens is a Navarro County city that arrived with the railroad in 1881. The Texas and St. Louis Railway surveyed a 270-acre townsite, named it for railroad official Richard C. Kerens, and laid the streets around the tracks. Cotton soon filled out the story, with gins and moved-in homes turning the rail stop into a town. Kerens also has a strange bit of Texas State Fair history: Big Tex began life here as the world’s largest Santa Claus. It is eastern Central Texas with cotton, railroad geometry, and one oversized local origin story.
