Kerhonkson, NY

Kerhonkson is an Ulster County hamlet and census-designated place straddling the towns of Rochester and Wawarsing. The 2020 census counted 1,722 residents. U.S. 209 is the main road, with Route 44/55 branching west toward the Shawangunk Mountains and Minnewaska State Park Preserve. The hamlet’s older story includes a colonial fort on Deyo’s Hill and freight moving along Rondout Creek by mule-drawn barges. That canal route later became the O&W rail corridor, and parts of it now carry the local rail trail. Kerhonkson is one of those places where a road junction, a valley, and a wider mailing area all share one name. Rondout Valley schools, farms, shops, and outdoor businesses give the place its present-day shape.

Kerhonkson Elementary and Rondout Valley High serve the area, while the old rail corridor brings walkers and cyclists through the valley. The Kerhonkson postal area is much larger than the CDP, reaching into Rochester, Wawarsing, and a piece of Olive, which is why local directions can feel broader than the hamlet itself. Soyuzivka, the Ukrainian Heritage Center, adds a cultural thread with festivals, performances, and language programs. The local scoop is that Kerhonkson is less a single compact downtown than a crossroads community—Route 209 in front, the Rondout valley behind it, and the ridge country close by.
