Kingsford, MI

Set along the Menominee River on Michigan's border with Wisconsin, Kingsford is a friendly Upper Peninsula community of about 5,000 residents. The town was founded in the 1920s when Henry Ford built a sawmill and parts plant here, famously turning excess timber into the original Kingsford charcoal briquettes. Today, the area offers a relaxed, small-town pace with plenty of outdoor recreation, from winter skiing at Pine Mountain to summer boating on the river. Most everyday shopping, dining, and healthcare options are right next door in neighboring Iron Mountain.

Families are served by the Breitung Township School District, where local pride runs deep and the sports teams still go by the Flivvers in a nod to the town's Model T history. The residential streets are quiet and walkable, with short commutes and convenient access to regional flights at Ford Airport. For specialty medical care or bigger retail runs, residents often take an easy day trip down to Green Bay or up to Marquette, giving Kingsford a great balance of peaceful Northwoods living and regional convenience.
