Kirkwood, PA

Kirkwood is an unincorporated farming census-designated place in Colerain Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, part of the Lancaster metropolitan area and Pennsylvania Dutch Country. Pennsylvania Route 472 passes through the center, linking Kirkwood with Quarryville and Oxford. The post office opened in 1856, and a school followed in 1899, giving the crossroads a formal address and a local place for children.

Colerain’s story is rural and school-centered. The township built seven schools in 1834; Amish parochial schools grew after 1948, and a local Amish school system expanded through the following decades. Kirkwood’s post office, roads, farmhouses, and school history sit in the same landscape of working farms and Octoraro country. Nearby lanes cross Octoraro country and connect farms to the market towns. Route 472 gives the CDP a direct route to Quarryville and Oxford, but the surrounding lanes lead into the larger farming township. Kirkwood is a southeastern Lancaster County community where postal service, one-room school history, Amish education, and farm roads still line up.
