Knik River, AK

Knik River is a Matanuska-Susitna Borough census-designated place about 15 miles southeast of Palmer, set along the river that gives it its name. Long before the modern road network, the K’enaht’ana Dena’ina traveled this country on a winter trail from Eklutna up the Knik River toward the Copper River. Today the Knik River Public Use Area covers roughly 200,000 acres of state land, with the Knik Glacier, Pioneer Peak, and braided river channels giving the area its big geographic markers. The place sits inside the Anchorage metropolitan area on paper, but its day-to-day map is river, gravel bars, public-use land, and the long road back toward Palmer and Wasilla. Knik River is Alaska in a very literal sense: a named river valley with a trail history still underfoot.
