Knox, PA

Knox is a Clarion County borough where Pennsylvania Route 208 runs through the center, connecting east to U.S. 322 at Shippenville and west toward Emlenton. The community began around 1840 as Edenburg Borough, then changed direction during the oil boom. Hotels, saloons, stores, a bank, workshops, and new homes filled in around the wells, giving the town a burst of growth that still shapes its older streets. Six major fires in the late nineteenth century added another layer to Knox's story.

Knox also had a newspaper distinction: the first daily paper in Clarion County was published here. Today Main Street shops, services, and eateries give the borough a practical center, while Horsethief Days keeps alive the legend of Sebastian Boss Buck and the area's oil-country folklore. Route 338 provides another connection to U.S. 322 and Interstate 80, so Knox still works as a small service point for the surrounding countryside. Its local character comes from the overlap of oil history, rebuilt storefronts, road connections, and a festival with a wonderfully specific name.
