Kooskia, ID

Kooskia sits where the Middle Fork and South Fork of the Clearwater River meet, a location that has always made the town feel connected to the movement of water, people, and goods through north-central Idaho. The Nez Perce used the Clearwater and its tributaries as travel, trade, and fishing routes, and the nearby confluence remains part of the landscape’s meaning. Kooskia’s name is tied to a Nez Perce expression associated with the clarity of the rivers. The townsite was first surveyed under the name Stuart, then took the name Kooskia as the railroad arrived around the turn of the twentieth century.

Today US 12 carries travelers through town toward the Lochsa corridor, while local work still reflects the valley’s mix of forests, farms, cattle country, and outdoor travel. The Kooskia National Fish Hatchery, a short distance southeast, raises spring Chinook and has been managed by the Nez Perce Tribe since 2007. In town, groceries, schools, civic services, and small businesses serve a broad rural area. Kooskia is a place where a river junction is more than scenery: it shapes the roads, the work, the history people remember, and the direction visitors take when they are headed into the mountains.
