Lewiston, ID

Lewiston occupies the meeting point of the Clearwater and Snake rivers, where the lower Snake turns west into Washington on its way to the Columbia. Long before the present city, the Nez Perce used this place as a winter camp and called it She-me-ne-kem, or "meeting of the waters." A non-Native settlement formed in 1861 during a gold rush on land then within the Nez Perce Reservation. The same river geography later made Lewiston a freight terminus. Idaho's only seaport sits 465 river miles from the Pacific at the eastern end of the Columbia-Snake navigation system, with barges carrying bulk and containerized cargo. Lewiston had 34,203 residents in the 2020 census; the July 2025 estimate was 34,717. The waterfront also structures recreation. The city's current comprehensive plan identifies a 12.3-mile Levee Parkway and Greenbelt trail network, much of it along the two rivers, and the 48th annual Seaport River Run in April 2026 used courses between Swallows Park and Hells Gate Marina.

Lewis-Clark State College forms another center of community activity: founded in Lewiston in 1893, it reported a fall 2025 enrollment of 4,046 and more than 130 degree and certificate options. The Lewiston City Library extends service beyond its downtown building through Library on the Go, bringing books, laptops, tablets, a printer, and 5G Wi-Fi to neighborhood parks in summer 2026. Lewiston Transit operates east and west fixed routes through downtown and the Orchards, with connections to regional services; its published hours cover weekdays and Saturdays.
