Lewiston sits right where the Clearwater River flows into the Snake, creating a natural border between Idaho and Washington. Long before prospectors arrived during the 1861 gold rush, the Nez Perce called this valley She-me-ne-kem, or the "meeting of the waters," prizing it as a sheltered winter camp. Today, this community of about 35,000 residents enjoys some of the warmest weather in Idaho thanks to its low elevation, earning it the nickname the "Banana Belt." The surrounding rivers still shape daily life, giving the town a laid-back feel with easy access to water, canyons, and rolling hills.

One of Lewiston's most interesting quirks is its status as Idaho's only seaport. Sitting 465 miles inland from the Pacific Ocean, its working docks and grain elevators link local agriculture and timber directly to global shipping routes down the Columbia River. Beyond river commerce, the job market is supported by regional hospitals, manufacturing, local schools, and tourism. Together with Clarkston just across the state line, Lewiston serves as the commercial hub for the entire Lewis-Clark Valley, providing big-town conveniences without losing its small-town comfort.

Lewis-Clark State College adds youthful energy to the city along with collegiate sports, arts programming, and the annual NAIA World Series baseball tournament.
