Kratzerville, PA

Kratzerville occupies the southeastern corner of Jackson Township in Snyder County, a small Pennsylvania CDP shaped by the Penns Creek valley around it. Just north of the community, Penns Creek cuts past a scalloped shale outcrop and a wooded edge of sugar maple, red maple, shagbark hickory, red elm, and eastern hemlock. The surrounding ground is mostly agricultural, with homes and seasonal cottages following the creek. The north-bank slopes support jeweled shooting-star, a tiny botanical detail that makes the local landscape more distinctive than a map pin suggests.

The road crossing at Kratzerville also has its own history. The concrete arch bridge carrying PA 1016 over Penns Creek was built in 1925, rehabilitated around 1990, and replaced in 2010. The community's roads follow that same narrow valley pattern. The stream remains the defining thread. That mix of river, road, farm fields, and wooded slopes is the useful way to picture Kratzerville: a small community embedded in the working and natural landscape of Snyder County.
