About Lacon
Lacon is the Marshall County seat on the east bank of the Illinois River, with the courthouse and bridge doing most of the town's map work. The settlement was laid out in 1831 as Strawn's Landing, briefly called Columbia, and finally named Lacon after Laconia in Greece. A 19th-century ferry once crossed where the bridge stands, and the Old Settlers' Picnic has been held each summer since 1870. Lacon is a central Illinois river town with a name that traveled from Greece to the Illinois shore.
