Lacona, NY

Lacona is a village inside Sandy Creek in Oswego County, halfway between Syracuse and Watertown. Little Sandy Creek runs west through the village and on toward neighboring Sandy Creek, while Interstate 81 passes east of town. The 2020 census counted 657 residents. Water, the old route south, and the highway all help place this small village in the north-country landscape.

Settlement began around 1803, and Lacona incorporated in 1880 as its role grew beside the Watertown and Rome railroad. The former depot now holds shared village offices and a collection of local papers, photographs, postcards, and railroad memorabilia. The volunteer fire department marked 140 years in 2020. In warmer months, a farmers' market sets up at South Side of Bridge Side Park, where the creek, playground, and village routines meet. Lacona's historic buildings and listed sites sit alongside everyday Sandy Creek life, preserving the feel of a place that grew from water power, a rail stop, and a handful of local businesses.
