Lafayette got its start in the late 1880s when local pioneer Mary Miller discovered coal on her family farm. After platting the town and naming it in honor of her late husband, she helped shape the growing community into a bustling hub for miners and their families, even serving as the local bank president. For decades, coal fueled the regional economy and brought generations of hardworking families to the area. Today, that heritage still gives the town its grounded character and close-knit community feel.
