Lake Barcroft's waterfront works more like shared private infrastructure than a public park. The nonprofit Lake Barcroft Association operates the lake, dam, beaches at five sites, and other common property for dues-paying households. Beach tags are limited to full-time residents, boats must display current registration, and the association's 2026 service fee is just under $619 per lot. That structure makes water quality, dredging, dam care, and beach operations recurring community business. It also shapes the social calendar. The 2026 schedule included Independence Day fireworks and a parade, Sand Day games and a cardboard-boat regatta at Beach 3, and a ten-day junior lifeguard camp covering boating, open-water security, CPR, and first aid. Today's arrangement traces back to a utility reservoir. The Alexandria Water Company built the dam on Holmes Run in 1913 to supply drinking water, and the community's own history dates its association to 1950.

Community members bought Barcroft Beach Inc., including the lake, dam, and common land, for $300,000 in 1970. The lake remains privately owned within the Cameron Run watershed. The 2020 census recorded 9,770 people in Lake Barcroft. Its 2020-2024 housing profile shows 68 percent owner occupancy, a median owner-occupied value of $887,300, and median monthly costs of $3,486 for mortgage holders and $1,923 for renters. Median household income was $140,882, yet the same profile reported 11 percent of people under age 65 without health insurance. Nearly 32 percent of residents were foreign-born, 40 percent of people age five or older spoke a language other than English at home, and workers averaged about 30 minutes of travel to work.
