About Lake Bridgeport

Lake Bridgeport is a city in Wise County, Texas, with 339 people in the 2020 census. The city sits beside the reservoir that gives it its name, about four miles west of Bridgeport on the West Fork Trinity River. State water records trace the project to a 1928 authorization: construction began in 1930, the original dam was finished in 1931, and impoundment began in 1932. The lake was enlarged with a new spillway in 1971 and 1972.

Lake Bridgeport is a working water system as well as a recreation lake. The Tarrant Regional Water District operates it with Eagle Mountain Lake and Lake Worth for flood control, water storage, and recreation; a 2010 survey measured about 11,712 acres of surface area, and Texas Parks and Wildlife describes roughly 170 miles of shoreline for fishing access. Bridgeport Independent School District serves the city of Lake Bridgeport along with Bridgeport, Runaway Bay, and rural western Wise County. The local scoop is a tiny city named for a reservoir whose dam, spillway, shoreline, and school district all tie it to the larger Bridgeport area.
