Lake Forest was planned from the start as a quiet, picturesque community nestled around Lake Forest College and the Lake Michigan bluffs. Founded in the 1850s, the town was laid out with winding, tree-lined roads specifically designed to deter cut-through traffic and preserve a secluded, peaceful feel. It quickly grew into one of Chicago's premier North Shore suburbs, blending historic estate architecture, wooded neighborhoods, and easy commuter rail access to the city. With its distinctive clock towers, central green lawn, boutique shops, and cozy cafes, it feels remarkably inviting and walkable. Just steps away, the Gorton Community Center hosts film screenings, youth theater, art classes, and neighborhood gatherings. Right next door, Lake Forest College adds a classic college-town touch with guest lectures, athletic games, and scenic campus grounds that blend directly into the surrounding residential streets.

Outdoor recreation is a major draw for locals, starting right on the water at Forest Park Beach.
