Lake Hamilton, FL

Lake Hamilton is a Polk County town built around the lake that gives it its name, one of the linked waters in the Winter Haven Chain of Lakes. The community began taking shape in 1913; the first house, store, school, railroad station, and post office followed within a few years. The town charter dates to 1924, and Lake Hamilton had 1,537 residents in 2020. Before the name settled, the lake was called Lake Hambleton. Water is still the town’s main compass.

Lake Hamilton stretches along the community, with Bonars Island carrying the story of Chief Chipco and the Creek and Seminole people who lived there in the 1850s. A monument in Lake Hamilton Park keeps that history visible, while Scenic Highway and US 27 connect the town to Lake Wales, Haines City, and Winter Haven. Lake Hamilton is a small central Florida town where orange-blossom country, lake roads, old rail history, and a deep Seminole-era story share the same shoreline.
