Lake Linden, MI

Lake Linden is a Houghton County village on the north end of Torch Lake, mostly within Schoolcraft Township with a small part in Torch Lake Township. The 2020 census counted 1,020 residents. Its name honors an early settler, and its story is tied to the copper industry that built mills and communities around the Keweenaw. In May 1887, a fire swept through the village, destroying roughly three quarters of the buildings and leaving many families without homes. Rebuilding produced the brick and stone commercial blocks seen along Calumet Street.

The Lake Linden Historic District follows the main business street and nearby residential blocks, with most contributing buildings dating from the fire recovery years through about 1930. The Village Hall and Fire Station, First Congregational Church, and Joseph Bosch Building are among the places that keep the older town center legible. The Bosch family also operated a brewery that was rebuilt after the fire, another reminder of how trade grew beside mining and milling. Torch Lake gives Lake Linden its broad horizon, while the compact district and village services show how a Copper Country settlement rebuilt itself on the same shore.
