Lake Nebagamon, WI

Lake Nebagamon is a Douglas County village southeast of Superior, built around a lake whose name also gives the town its shape. It began as a sawmill and railroad town during northern Wisconsin’s late-nineteenth-century logging era. When logging declined, the village turned toward the lake: vacationers arrived from Wisconsin and neighboring states, and the public beach and boat landing became central gathering places. The lake still organizes the calendar, with swimming, boating, fishing, snowmobiling, and ice fishing on the village’s year-round list of activities. The 1936 WPA-built Nebagamon Auditorium remains a civic, cultural, and recreation center, and Camp Nebagamon, founded in 1929, adds a long-running summer-camp presence. Lake Nebagamon is a small place where a timber-and-railroad past meets a four-season lake-centered calendar at the village shoreline.
