About Lake Park

Lake Park sits along U.S. Route 10 in Becker County, southwest of Labelle Lake. Its story begins in a place where fur traders settled in 1841 beside a Dakota encampment on Lake Flora. In 1871, the Liberty Township Board adopted Lake Park Township, a name tied to a Dakota phrase often rendered “Where the Prairies Meet the Waters.” The community later grew around a Great Northern Railway stop, giving the small city a transportation history closely tied to its lakes and prairie setting.

School life now crosses the city line. The Lake Park Audubon district places its high school in Lake Park and its elementary school in neighboring Audubon, linking the two communities through everyday student and family routines. City Park occupies part of the Lake Flora setting described in the town’s early history, while the highway and former rail corridor keep the place oriented toward Becker County’s larger network of towns. For a newcomer, Lake Park comes into focus through those connections: Dakota history beside the lake, a railroad-era town site, and a shared school system that reaches across the prairie.
