Lake Petersburg, IL

Lake Petersburg is a Menard County census-designated place wrapped around a reservoir southwest of Petersburg. The 2020 census counted 740 residents. The lake sits in a valley that drains toward the Sangamon River, a short distance east, while Petersburg and the county courthouse are a short drive north. The community's geography is simple and telling: water in the middle, houses around it, county-seat history nearby. The shoreline is the community's front porch, with water as the shared reference point for every season and nearby weekend plans.

The reservoir is used for boating, fishing, and other resident recreation, and the lake association handles shared infrastructure around the shoreline. That puts Lake Petersburg in a familiar central Illinois pattern - a lakeside neighborhood close to an older river town and the New Salem landscape. The place is separate from Petersburg on the map, but the two are linked by the road, the county, and the Sangamon River valley that holds them both.
