Lake Ronkonkoma, NY

The lake that gives Lake Ronkonkoma its name is both a public recreation site and an active water-management concern. Suffolk County's park on the north shore supports shore fishing, self-launched boats, ball fields, basketball and handball courts, picnicking, and two accessible play areas designed for different age groups. Raynor Beach County Park adds paved walking and jogging paths, soccer and baseball fields, tennis and basketball courts, playgrounds, a pavilion, and a lake overlook on a 16-acre plateau. Together, the two parks provide much of the community's public outdoor space without treating the water itself as continuously available for swimming. Lake Ronkonkoma recorded 18,619 residents in 2020, down from 20,155 in 2010.
